Context

In 2007 Kenya witnessed violent conflict following the general elections which quickly spread across many parts of the country.

The economic and social tensions underpinning the violence had developed over decades; and most major investigations into the violence identified land issues as one of the root causes.

Land reform is not just an issue of equitable distribution, but also an issue of economic, industrial, and rural development.

With our partners, the Sychar Centre and the Institute for the Study of African Realities, we are providing a forum for policy-makers to work together on issues that may be causes of conflict. The primary current area of work focuses on land issues.

The disturbances in Kenya showed the danger of complacency about stability and security in an apparently peaceful country.  Such instability impacts on the development of both Kenya itself and other countries in the region.
