Afghanistan

Context
Afghanistan is one of the world’s most war-torn nations. Due to its strategic location as the gateway between the Middle East and the rest of Asia, it has been the battling-ground for many of the world’s superpowers.

In addition, Afghanistan is an ethnically diverse nation with continuing internal struggles between tribes and families.

Background research and a detailed assessment of conflict in Afghanistan was undertaken by Concordis in 2003, prior to a visit to Afghanistan in January 2004.

Concordis has maintained a modest level of research and networking on Afghanistan for several years and has been involved in the Afghan/Canadian-led Pathways to Peace project, which involved co-facilitating a civil society conference in Kabul in April 2010. Currently, we are researching the potential contribution of Afghanistan's neighbours to stability through the cooperative management of border issues.
